The concept of Push-to-Talk over Cellular (POC) was introduced as an alternative to land mobile radio (LMR) communications. It offered the ability to take advantage of connecting through a growing number of cellular networks and towers. POC now has coverage far beyond the reach of existing LMR networks, along with the capabilities of high speed data.
POC applications support many of the same features as digital radios (group calls, GPS location, messaging, emergency notifications, etc.), typically at a cost savings. Furthermore, POC systems are able to communicate outside the traditional bounds of any LMR system.
LMR has been the default means of communications for wireless users, primarily among public safety and military operators. Technology has advanced to provide mobile devices many of the same features. However, POC applications and devices are still not yet considered mission critical.
There are several reasons agencies may want to maintain radio communications, even after implementing a POC solution. These include avoiding recurring fees, providing intrinsically safe devices, and relying on a communications network more capable of surviving infrastructure damage.
POC radio interfaces bridge both systems to provide ideal functionality and coverage expansion while remaining cost-effective and reliable. System capabilities may be shared beyond radio users with other key personnel.
Demand for two way radio over cellular continues to grow as more and more users require seamless integration with their POC counterparts. JPS radio gateways, such as the FirstNet Certified® RSP-Z2, provide a bridging interface between LMR systems and many modern POC solutions.
These products also offer a substantial amount of flexibility, supporting any requirement from 1:1 standalone applications to statewide solutions. Devices are deployed in a fraction of the time compared to LMR Equipment, both temporarily and permanently.
The RSP-Z2 is designed with push-to-talk over cellular integration in mind. It is capable of hosting up to two LMR interfaces and two POC interfaces.
